about

The inspiration for this track came from the third Earthsea novel, The Farthest Shore, written by Ursula K Le Guin. The Dry Land is where the spirit of the dead goes after death, wandering hopeless and alone. It is a realm of eternal night, shadow and dust, beneath a changeless sky. Dreary and dismal, the Dry Land offers no comfort. A wizard may enter this realm, but to escape the Dry Land one must travel beneath the Mountains of Pain. As a metaphor for death, I cannot imagine that such a place could serve any such purpose, but it makes for great literature, and it evokes a sense of unimaginable time.

This song was built up from an old, lost fragment of a piece of music written by Eric Brown in the early part of the century. Like an archeologist, I excavated this music and integrated it into the session which became The Dry Land.
